City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan is keen to let the fruits of local government (LG) system reach the grassroots level, a city government spokesman said here on Tuesday. He said the very objective of development funds that were allocated to Union Council Nazims and members of City Council, had been to help elected public representatives solve the problems of people at grassroots level. He said the Union Council could carry out development works as per requirements of their areas.

In this regard Rs 1057 million have been spent so far, the spokesman said adding that with this amount 950 km of roads were constructed in Union Councils, CC flooring carried out in streets, water and sewerage schemes implemented, street lights installed and parks rehabilitated.

He said the first of its kind Women Library Complex near NIPA Chowrangi is under construction with the funds of women councillors belonging to Al-Khidmat group.

The spokesman said that during the last 3 years the City Council allocated Rs 3.17 billion towards UC development fund.

He said the reports which appeared in a section of press with reference to an inquiry by Chief Minister's Inspection team into Rs 5 billion funds of Union Councillors is either the result of some misunderstanding or a part of the propaganda campaign being carried out against the city government.
